Snuggle Bunnies: What They Are and Why Every Parent Wants One
Being a parent can sometimes feel like you’re starring in a bizarre reality game show.
To win the grand prize you must survive on zero sleep, custard creams and lukewarm coffee. The more milk, food and unidentifiable stains you have on your clothes, the more points you earn.
Baby poo? Bonus points.
If you’ve ever found yourself in Aldi gently rocking a loaf of bread to sleep while trying to remember what day of the week it is… congratulations.
YOU’RE THE WINNER.
As a mum of seven, I’ve done my fair share of 3am Googling:
-
Is it safe to use dry shampoo 6 days in a row?
-
How long can I survive on coffee and doughnuts?
-
Will I ever sleep again or is this just who I am now?
So this is the bit where I tell you how to fix all of this, right?
Wrong.
I’ve still got 99 parenting problems over here… and my kids are every single one of them!
But I can try to make things a little bit easier — because one thing that has helped with my youngest children (and hundreds of Snugabug babies) is the magical softness of a Snuggle Square comforter.
What Is a Snuggle Square?
A Snuggle Square is a soft baby comforter designed to help babies feel calm, secure and settled.
You might hear them called different things:
-
loveys
-
security blankets
-
blankies
-
snugs
-
“stinky string” (yes, really!)
Snuggle Squares sit somewhere between a mini blanket and a plush toy, making them perfect for little hands to hold, cuddle and carry everywhere.
They’re often introduced as part of a baby’s bedtime or nap routine, helping babies feel safe even when mum or dad isn’t right there.
Why Do Babies Get Attached to Comforters?
From around six months old, babies begin forming strong emotional attachments to familiar objects.
This is completely normal and actually helpful for sleep.
A comforter becomes something your baby associates with:
-
calm moments
-
sleep
-
cuddles
-
familiar routines
Over time, it becomes their comfort object.
The one they reach for when they’re tired, overwhelmed or settling down to sleep.
Why Snuggle Squares Work So Well
Comforters help babies in several simple but powerful ways.
Emotional comfort
A familiar comforter provides reassurance during changes such as:
-
travelling
-
starting nursery
-
bedtime routines
Familiar scent
Many parents like to sleep with the comforter for a few nights before introducing it.
That way it smells like home (or you!), which helps baby feel calmer.
A clear sleep cue
When the same comforter appears during naps and bedtime, babies begin to recognise that it’s time to settle down.
Comfort on the go
Snuggle Squares are small enough to travel everywhere:
-
pram
-
car seat
-
nappy bag
-
holidays
Which means your baby’s comfort object is always nearby.

When Can Babies Use a Comforter?
You can introduce a comforter from birth as a comfort object during cuddles and supervised time.
However, most babies start forming strong attachments from around six months, when they begin developing emotional bonds and the ability to self-soothe.
Safety tip
For younger babies:
-
keep comforters out of the cot during unsupervised sleep
-
allow baby to use them during cuddles or daytime comfort
-
introduce them gradually into sleep routines
Always follow safe sleep guidelines for your baby’s age.
If you're also choosing blankets for prams or naps, our Baby Blanket Size Guide explains the most common sizes used for newborns and toddlers.
A Tiny Comfort That Makes a Big Difference
A baby comforter might seem like a small thing.
But for your baby it quickly becomes something incredibly important.
The one that:
-
gets dragged everywhere
-
appears in every nap photo
-
mysteriously disappears under sofas
And becomes part of your family’s bedtime routine.
So whether you’re a new parent building a sleep routine, or you’re willing to try absolutely anything because 27 minutes is a cruel joke — not a nap, a soft comforter can make those early months just a little easier.
And that tiny square of softness might just become your baby’s favourite thing in the world.
