About SnugaBug
SnugaBug started in January 2020 but my knitting journey began many years before;
I learned to knit almost 30 years ago now when I was around 10 years old.
My great grandmother Phoebe was known in South Woodford for her intricate crochet
tablecloths that she made for her busy dining table of 13 children (it seems that I
haven’t only followed in her crafting footsteps!) and before long the neighbours were
putting in their doily and tablecloth orders too. She taught my nanny Jessie to knit,
who taught my mum and they both taught me. I don’t remember the hours of
frustration trying to get the hang of it … but I’m sure there were many!
I’ve always knitted on and off over the years but it wasn’t until I had Teddy in 2019
(the sixth child in our crazy family) that I discovered chenille yarn and the magical
comforting power these huggable baby blankets had. As soon as he felt the
softness of the blanket he would squeeze his little fingers through the holes and he’d
calm instantly. Teddy is 5 now and still has his blanket, called Butter Chicken (don’t
ask!) - and it’s always been such a comfort to him. Ted has autism and I think the
texture of the yarn really appeals to his sensory seeking nature. Butter Chicken
goes EVERYWHERE with us; especially places that make Ted a bit anxious - the
hairdressers, the doctors, anywhere with large groups of people, his first couple of
weeks at school.
After making Butter Chicken a few friends asked me to make a blanket for their little
ones. Then I took a bit of a leap and posted a few on social media and within a few
hours I’d sold my first blanket - a Simply White Baby Blanket to a lovely lady called
Kirsty that lives in Wales - I’ll never forget packaging up and posting off that one!
Gifting something handmade is so special and that’s at the heart of SnugaBug in
every product, from the blankets and comforters, the clothing, the knitting patterns
and the DIY knitting kits - everything is designed and made by me with so much love,
care and attention to detail, after all …
You can’t buy love but you can buy handmade and that’s kind of the same thing …
