Snuggle Bunnies: What They Are and Why Every Parent Wants One!

Snuggle Bunnies: What They Are and Why Every Parent Wants One!

Being a parent can sometimes feel like you’re starring in a bizarre reality game show:  to win the ‘prize’ you have to survive on zero sleep, custard creams and luke-warm coffee.  The more milk, food and unidentifiable stains you have on your clothes, the more points you get!  Baby poo means prizes people!  If you’re in Aldi rocking a loaf of bread to sleep and have no idea what day of the week it is … congratulations, YOU’RE THE WINNER!

As a mum of 7, I’ve done my fair share of 3am googling:

  • Is it safe to use dry shampoo 6 days in a row?

  • How long can I survive on coffee and donuts?

  • Will I ever sleep again or is this who I am now?

So this is the bit where I tell you how to fix all of this, right?

Wrong!  I’ve still got 99 parenting problems over here … and my kids are Every. Single. One!

But I can try and make it a little bit easier for you - it’s helped with my youngest children and hundreds of my customers’ babies too.  The magical softness that is Snuggle Squares!

As a parent, you’ve likely come across the word "comforter" – especially when researching baby sleep routines (at 3am whilst simultaneously singing Baby Shark because that’s the only thing that settles the baby). But what exactly is a Snuggle Square, and why do so many babies grow so attached to them?

At SnugaBug, I make a collection of soft, chenille Snuggle Squares that offer sensory comfort, calm, and cuddles for babies and toddlers. Read on and I’ll explain what a Snuggle Square is, when to introduce one, and why our handmade Snuggle Squares are the perfect first companion (that hopefully make your sleep routines just a little bit less like a survival in the wilderness challenge).

💡 What Is a Snuggle Square?

We call them Snuggle Squares but you’ll likely have your own name for them, such as (snugs, lovey, blankie, stinky string) - I’ve heard a few!  A Snuggle Square is a soft, cuddly object that helps babies feel safe and secure. Usually a mix between a plush toy and a mini blanket, Snuggle Squares are made to be hugged, held and snuggled — especially during sleep or moments of separation.

They’re often introduced as part of a baby’s bedtime or nap routine, helping your little one feel calm, even when you’re not right there.

🧸 Why Do Babies Get Attached to Snuggle Squares?

From around 6 months old, babies begin forming strong emotional attachments to familiar objects. A Snuggle Square becomes a source of comfort — especially when your baby is learning to self-soothe, sleep independently, or deal with changes in environment (like travelling or starting nursery).

A Snuggle Square helps because it:

  • Provides emotional security during transitions

  • Smells like home, or you! (lots of parents sleep with the Snuggle Squares for a few days first) which calms your baby

  • Becomes a familiar sleep cue as part of the bedtime routine

  • Is portable, offering comfort anywhere — pram, car seat, or cot

💤 When Can I Introduce a Snuggle Square?

You can begin introducing a Snuggle Square from birth but most importantly around 6 months, when your baby begins to develop emotional attachments and physical coordination. At this stage, it’s safer for baby to sleep with a soft object and they’re more likely to seek comfort from it.

Safety Tip:

For younger babies, keep Snuggle Squares out of the cot during unsupervised sleep. Start by snuggling with the square yourself, so it picks up your scent — making it even more comforting for your little one.
